F.A.Q.s

In printing, NCR stands for No Carbon Required; since it enables you to create carbon copies without the need for a separate carbon paper sheet. (It also stands for National Cash Register; the corporation that invented carbonless paper in 1953!)
NCR paper enables you to create instant copies of a handwritten document without a scanner, printer or photocopier.

Each NCR page consists of two or more layered paper sheets printed with a dye backing. As you write onto the top sheet, the pressure applied from the pen transfers the dye onto the sheet underneath – creating an identical counterpart of the original document.
NCR paper is also known as personalised invoice books, receipt books, tax invoice books, docket books, order books, carbonless paper, carbonless copy paper, and multipart stationery.

Accident & injury reports, Accommodation guest bills, Application forms, Booking forms, Business forms, Car hire forms, Car inspection checklists, Car sales invoices, Car service reports, Checklists, Cleaning forms, Collection notes, Delivery note forms, Dental records, Driver defect reports, Electrical forms, Estimate forms, Quote forms, Expense forms, Food Safety, Gas safety certificates, Hazardous waste forms, Hire plant agreements, Invoice books, Job sheets, Maintenance checklists, Medical reports & assessments, Oral health assessments, Order forms, Permits to work, Pest control, Petty cash records, Purchase orders, Quality checklists, Receipts, Risk assessments, Safety check forms, Site reports, Statements, Timesheets, Worksheets, Laundry lists, Notepads, and much more!

  • NCR is also known as ‘multipart stationery’ because each NCR set consists of multiple paper sheets or ‘parts’.

  • A 2-part NCR form features one top page and one following - enabling you to duplicate your writing across two pages (you can keep one and give the other to the customer)

  • A 3-part NCR form features a top page and two following - enabling you to triplicate your writing across three pages

  • There are plenty of ways to customise your NCR – here are just a couple:
  • Pads, booklets, sets
  • Sizes (A5, A4 and more)
  • Numbering
  • Cover stocks
  • Full-colour printing
  • Design variations & variable data printing
  • Drilled holes & perforated sections

NCR can be a little tricky to design for, mainly because there is a bit of confusion between Portrait vs Landscape, Long vs Short edge binding.

Tip: Think of it like this… Long Edge Bind = Portrait. Short Edge Bind = Landscape

The orientation of your artwork is no consequence. Just pay attention to whether it is bound on the long or short edge.

When creating your file or choosing the correct template, you will need to know a few things about your job first:

Finish size (A4, A5, DL or Custom)Bound on Long or Short EdgeIs the front cover Printed or Unprinted?
Is the artwork for the NCR pages Common or Unique for each sheet?
Is the finished size including or excluding the 10mm butt for binding?

Knowing all of the above information will help you create the file correctly. We’ve included all the information you will need to know to adhere to our print specifications below.

Size
Create your file at the finished size of the product your’ve chosen. (If you have chosen an Invoice Book with a ‘10mm Butt’ please add this onto the size, e.g A4+10mm bound on the long edge will be 220x297mm).

Perforation Line (Books only)

The perforation line is 15mm from the edge of the bound edge, with a 5mm quiet zone either side of the perforation. If you are printing 2 sides, be aware of where the Perf will line up on the 2nd page in regards to your artwork (this is on the opposite side for the reverse of the page)

Common Artwork (2, 3 or 4 part)

If the artwork is exactly the same on all NCR pages, you only need a 1-page PDF, or 2 pages for 2-sided print to upload. For example, for a Triplicate book, printed on both sides, you only need 1x PDF file with a front and back page, you do not need to create all 6 pages.

Unique Artwork (2, 3 or 4 part)
Unique Artwork is when you have different elements on each of the NCR pages within a set. For example, the top sheet has a Customer Copy written on it, the 2nd sheet has a Supplier Copy and the bottom page has Internal. If you are designing for a Unique Artwork invoice book, just duplicate the page (or pages for 2-sided print) with the same number of ‘Parts’ you are printing. You will need a 1 page PDF (or 2 pages for 2 sided print) to upload per section (or part).

Yes, we do! You can download them from here.

When choosing the correct template, you will need to know a few things about your job first:

Finished size (A4, A5, DL or Custom)
Is your book bound on the Long or Short Edge
Is the front cover Printed or Unprinted?
Is the artwork for the NCR pages Common or Unique for each sheet?
Is the finished size including or excluding the 10mm butt for binding?

Please follow the instructions supplied in the template.

You do not need to type a start number on your artwork, just position where you would like the numbering printed. You will get an opportunity to update the start number in the Custom Quote tool when you place your order. Whatever you put into this box will appear as your Start Number, so only input numbers, no extra notes or text. It’s done this way so that when it comes time to reorder books, you just need to update the quote and not the artwork.

If you use our Indesign Templates: there are 4 start number text boxes, and you can choose between 4 - 7 digits. Delete the 3 text boxes you do NOT want, leave one box only.

If you do not use our templates please follow these instructions on how to indicate where your number goes: Create a text box and key X’s into the text box (this can be from 4 - 7 X’s). When numbering is required, we recommend that your text is in Arial Bold, at 20pt as this is what they will be printed as. Ensure that you have a 5mm area clear space around your number.

The ‘start number’ will need to be indicated on your final artwork in spot colour. To set up, please follow these instructions:

  • Start by creating a new swatch
  • Name the swatch ‘startnumber’
  • Set colour type to SpotSet
  • Set colour mode to CMYK
  • Place these values in Cyan: 0%, Magenta:100%, Yellow 100%, Black: 0% and save
  • Ensure the swatch is named ‘startnumber’ and save your swatch.
  • Select your start number text and change the colour to your newly created ‘startnumber’ swatch.

You can upload unnumbered Invoice books, but there is no change in price for this.
